The owners of Restoration House have also restored an ancient farmhouse beautifully situated on a spur overlooking a glorious valley of vineyards, olive groves, wheat fields and truffle woods, and looking back to the 13th century Castello nearby in the village of San Giovanni d'Asso.
This area of the Val d'Orcia is just 30 kilometres from Siena and renowned for the beauty of its light and landscape. There are wonderful views from the loggia and aia (ancient threshing floor) towards Monte Amiata are spectacular. The village is 5 minutes walk away and hosts a popular truffle festival in the first weeks of November, and the adjacent village of Montisi hosts a world famous harpsichord festival in July.
The house itself is remarkable both for its antiquity and for the sensitivity and restraint of its restoration. The original cantinas and outbuildings are unaltered, the old orto (vegetable garden) is still maintained by a villager and the whole atmosphere is one of undisturbed and continuing tradition.
If you have enjoyed the approach to restoring and conserving evident at Restoration House you may well find this old farmhouse much to your taste as the same aesthetic principles have been applied to both. There are few mod cons and no swimming pool. This is truly a place to get away from modern stress and the rental rates are remarkably reasonable.
